Douglas O. Smith has been a practicing business lawyer for more than 35 years. From 2007 to 2015 he served as associate general counsel at Marquette University. Previously, Professor Smith was a captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate’s Corps and was with a law firm in Dallas, in both cases practicing government contracts law. After becoming group counsel at Johnson Controls in 1990, Professor Smith has served 25 years in a variety of in-house legal roles, including at the Medical College of Wisconsin, providing a wide variety of business-related legal services.
Professor Smith currently teaches BULA 3001, Legal Environment of Business; MBA 6200, Enterprise Risk Management; BULA 4001, Business Law; and BUAD 6931 and EXBU 6931, Business Law. He also serves in the Marquette University Law School as an adjunct professor of law. He previously taught economics and law, organizational behavior, and strategic management in the College of Business Administration. Professor Smith also served for five years as president of the Zeta of Wisconsin Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest honorary academic fraternity society in the United States.
